Theriogenology Services in Ceres

Theriogenology is the umbrella term for all aspects of veterinary reproductive medicine and surgery.

This encompasses the basic science of pharmacology, physiology, pathology and anatomy, in addition to all elements of clinical practice relating to male and female reproduction, neonatology and obstetrics.

Our board-certified theriogenologist offers advanced reproductive services for many types of companion animals—most commonly dogs—including breeding management, artificial and transcervical insemination, semen freezing and infertility exams.

Our Board-Certified Veterinary Theriogenologist

A theriogenologist is a board-certified veterinary reproductive specialist who has advanced post-DVM education and training, and has been recognized and evaluated by the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American College of Theriogenologists.

Our Theriogenology Services

Breeders or pet owners who plan to breed their animals may require a wide range of services. Theriogenology services at American Pet Clinic include:

  • Breeding Management

Are you looking to breed your bitch? We can help plan breeding in advance.

We usually begin to see bitches soon after owners notice they are in heat (estrus). By observing her three times a week and measuring the concentration of progesterone in her blood, we can learn when she should be inseminated to increase chances of fertility and maximize potential litter size.

Our board-certified theriogenologist can help with natural breeding and artificial insemination with fresh, cool-shipped or frozen semen.

Health is always our first priority, so continuous monitoring of the bitch and her fetuses during pregnancy is a must. We can also predict an expected whelping date.

  • Breeding Soundness Evaluations

Breeders often wonder about the reproduction potential of their animals. A breeding soundness evaluation can offer definitive answers. These exams can reveal whether any issues could lead to problems during whelping or gestation, in addition to failed insemination or mating,

This assessment involves taking a thorough medical history as well as completing a physical exam—a complete systematic evaluation. In males, the penis, testicles and prostate are examined.

Semen collection and evalution may also be recommended. A vaginal exam and mammary chain examination will be completed for a female.

  • Genitourinary Tract Disorder Diagnosis & Treatment

Bacteria can invade the genitourinary tract and cause infections (Escherichia coli is most commonly to blame, but other gram-negative bacteria, streptococci and staphylococci may also invade).

Bacterial infections in a cat's or dog's genitourinary tract can include lower urinary tract infections, prostatitis, pyelonephritis, epididymitis and orchitis, metritis, vaginitis, renal abscesses and pyometra. Depending on the nature of the infection, fertility may be affected.

At American Pet Clinic, we can help diagnose and treat these infections.

  • Artificial Insemination
Our board-certified theriogenologist can assist with artificial insemination using fresh, cool-shipped or frozen semen. Since we always prioritize the health of any animal and pet being considered for insemination, continuous health monitoring is a must during every step of the process. We can also help collect semen for local insemination.
  • Infertility Management

Infertility can hamper breeding efforts. We will investigate fertility issues of both male and female animals, including searching for functional or anatomical abnormalities that may be causing the difficulty.

We can also screen for infectious diseases, perform semen analysis, testicular or endometrial biopsy, and provide appropriate treatment.

  • Consultations by Phone or Email

Do you have a unique case, question or concern you'd like us to consult on? We are happy to offer consultations via phone or email.
